I love how much energy the city has and how densely packed it is with creativity and inspiration. There’s always so much going on it would be impossible to do it all, but I really like that amount of opportunity, even if it is overwhelming at times. I feel like I have a better idea of what it would be like to be an independent artist working in New York after having participated in the program, and I am interested in coming back to New York after I graduate.

The New York Studio Residency Program has had an amazing impact on my practice, and I feel it will be an experience I continue to reflect on far in the future. It has informed and matured my work through critical theory, exposure to vast amounts of art, and the opinions and creative ideas from my peers within the program. The relationships I have built here will be a valuable asset to me in the future as I enter into the art community beyond undergraduate school.

NYSRP has really opened me up to the idea of an individualized studio practice. The time in the studio is a time of experimentation and play that is really fulfilling. Working with my peers and the dialogues that arose through informal conversation with them, seemed to be the best tool for development of my ideas. New York is so much fun and has so much to offer in terms of people and places.

My overall experience of participating in this program has given me the freedom/burden to create self-directed art and learn from my own mistakes for discoveries and improvements to enhance my personal art practice. The Dumbo area accommodates this experience by being a very safe and lively environment for such a study and practice to flourish.

The past few months spent with the New York Studio Residency Program have been some of the most influential and mind bending experiences of my life. Having the greatest opportunity of working among fifteen extremely talented individuals, whilst being guided by some of the most creative thinkers I’ve ever had the pleasure of sharing with, has proved to be the game changer I had been longing for. A semester filled with growth and love. To my studio mates, you’re forever in my thoughts.
